Canelo Alvarez Vs. Sergey Kovalev Odds, Preview And Prediction
WBA and WBC middleweight and WBC secondary super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will look to add a world title in another weight class on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo challenges WBO Light Heavyweight Champion Sergey Kovalev for his title in the main event of huge DAZN boxing card.
Some may find it strange to see Canelo listed as such a clear favorite by oddsmakers. The size disparity is striking, but there are some obvious reasons to lean toward Canelo in this fight.
Who Has the Edge?
Canelo is the younger man by seven years, and despite a long career with a wealth of fights, the Mexican superstar appears to be in his prime. Kovalev is still effective, but he hasn’t looked like a world-beating champion since he lost back-to-back fights to Andre Ward in 2016 and 2017.
Kovalev’s stamina and punching power have seemingly dipped over the past three years, and he’s also dealing with some legal issues outside the ring.
On November 25, Kovalev’s assault case goes to jury trial. To think that he’s defending his world title against an opponent of Canelo’s caliber in the same month that he’s facing a trial for a heinous crime is hard to absorb.
Kovalev does have the benefit of the services of trainer Buddy McGirt. The Hall-of-Famer was a huge reason Kovalev was able to rebound and defeat Eleider Alvarez in their rematch after being knocked out in the first fight.
McGirt also steered Kovalev through some muddy waters in his last title defense against Anthony Yarde in August. As good as McGirt is, and with as much as Kovalev still has left in the tank, it may not be enough against an opponent like Canelo.
Prediction
When you combine Kovalev’s age, less-than ideal conditioning, his vulnerability to body shots–which may all be connected–and his issues outside the ring, it’s too much for him to overcome against Canelo.
The fact that Kovalev just competed in a grueling bout a little over 60 days ago also doesn’t help.
The challenger’s advantage in hand speed is significant, and he has a tremendous fight IQ. He will seek out and find Kovalev’s body and break him in the middle rounds. Look for a sixth or seventh-round TKO win for Canelo either by trainer or referee stoppage.
